Gotoku Sakai heads to Stuttgart

The Japan Under-23 international Gotoku Sakai has moved from Albirex Niigata to the Bundesglia 1 club VFB Stuttgart on an eighteen month-long loan deal. The left-back, who was born in the United States and has a German mother, will join fellow Samurai Blue Shinji Okazaki in the Stuttgart squad. Sakai’s dual German-Japanese citizenship will ensure that no work permit will be required.

Sakai made his full debut at Albi aged just 17, and would have made the final 23-man squad for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup had he not suffered from back spasms two weeks prior to the beginning of the tournament.
